Interim Athletic Director Bill Trumbo
doesn't act like a man in a temporary job.
"I'm just behaving as though I'll be here
forever, which we know isn't going to be
the case," the interim athletic director
says. "[But] everybody is on temporary
appointment. It just depends on when it
ends."
In fact, Trumbo plans to apply for the
full time athletic director position after
his interim appointments ends on June 30.
The new hire would replace former athletic
director Steve Ward, who stepped down last
semester after 14 years on the job.
In the meantime, he's making some changes.
A short term goal is to initiate a
"Student Advisory Board" which Trumbo
likes to call the "Captains Council." It
would be made up of representatives from
each of the 17 sports and act as an
intermediary between himself and the
students.
The board might take on other tasks such
as fund raising and social outreach,
Trumbo says.
Another goal is to create a fundraising
structure so coaches don’t have to spend
their time raising money for meals while
on the road to away games, equipment and
uniforms.
Possibilities, Trumbo says, include
business and corporate support, creating a
booster club, a game sponsor program,
providing tickets on block sales, and
possibly dress-up the events with a band
night to attract more fans to the stadium.
Trumbo says he wants to incorporate his
experience as a coach, associate professor
and director of athletics into how he
handles his job here. He plans to use
student input and athlete support to run
the position.
"Sometimes, we overlook the great talent
and the intellect of our students," he
says.
Prior Trumbo has 24 years of experience as
an athletic director, most recently six
years at CSU Monterey Bay. He was also
athletic director at the University of
Hawaii, Hilo (10 years), Sonoma State
University (four years), and
Culver-Stockton College in Missouri (four
years).
Head Basketball Coach Steve Coccimiglio
feels optimistic about Trumbo’s plans for
fundraising, and has known Trumbo since
Trumbo worked as a coach for Santa Rosa
Jr. College.
"He has experience working with corporate
sponsors and the community" says Coccimiglio
In addition, Trumbo has 18 years of
experience as a Basketball coach, most
recently as a coach for three years at CSU
Monterey bay. He also worked as a coach at
Santa Rosa Jr. College (nine years),
Sonoma State (two years), and Garden Grove
high school (four years).
"He knows the struggles coaches go
through" says Coccimiglio.
But in the meantime, Trumbo says he is
just trying to support the staff in
administrative duties.
"If all coaches have to do is coach and
teach, they are going to be more
productive," Trumbo says. "If they have to
fund raise, if they have to sweep the
floor and prepare for meets, it stretches
them out and they aren't doing their job."

INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME
ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University and
the Donald P. Kennedy Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics will induct
three new members into its Athletic Hall
of Fame on Oct. 20, 2007 in a ceremony and
dinner on campus. The banquet will begin
with a reception at 4 p.m. and precede
Chapman’s final home football game of the
season against Cal Lutheran University at
7 p.m. at Wilson Field. The three
inductees will be Bill Trumbo ’61
(baseball/basketball), Doug Neely ’88
(soccer) and Stephanie Carew ’99
(softball).
Bill Trumbo ’61: A student-leader
at Chapman from 1957-61, Trumbo was a team
captain on the Panthers’ baseball and
basketball teams, as well as president of
Associated Students. In his playing days
he helped Chapman basketball to four NCAA
tournaments, including the national
runner-up team in 1958. He won Chapman’s
Hertzog Trophy in baseball and was named
Co-Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1961.
Trumbo’s basketball coaching career
included stops at Sonoma State, Idaho and
Santa Rosa Junior College. He also served
as Director of Athletics at Hawaii-Hilo
and Cal State Monterey Bay. In retirement
he has authored books and professional
articles on coaching and is the principal
consultant with Pyramid Power, dedicated
to providing programs that “Build Positive
Foundations through Sports”.
Doug Neely ’88: A standout soccer
career at Chapman from 1985-86 was just a
hint of what was to come professionally
for the former halfback. Neely went on to
a 15-year career (1987-02) in professional
soccer that included stops with the Los
Angeles Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer
League (MISL), the Anaheim Splash of the
Continental Indoor Soccer League and two
stops in Baltimore with the Blast also in
the MISL. He currently resides in Newport
Beach where he owns the printing company
Coastal Printing Solutions.
Stephanie Carew ’99: The
left-handed slugger earned All-America
honors three times from 1997-99 while
guiding the Panthers to two West Region
titles and the NCAA Division III
championship game twice (1998-99). She
also became the only Chapman athlete to be
selected twice to the All-America team and
the Academic All-America team. Carew’s
.501 career batting average still ranks
fourth all-time in Division III history,
while she also ranks No. 9 with 37 career
home runs and No. 2 with a .957 slugging
percentage – all Chapman records. She
currently works for LS Legacy Sports
Group, a player representation firm in
Newport Beach whose list of clients
includes Darin Erstad, Shawn Green and
Brad Penny.
The three newest members and all current
Hall of Fame members in attendance will be
recognized on the field during halftime of
the football game. Tickets are available
for $50 per person or $450 per table.

aware, I am no longer active in the
coaching profession, but I am certainly
active pursuing other endeavors.
Currently I am the principal consultant

Through Sports.” I am very excited about
this and I would hope that you take a

I still remain a member of the NABC and am
involved with basketball by running youth
tournaments in California and Hawaii. I am
also holding a market reservation for a
team that will play in Monterey in the
2007-08 season of the American Basketball
